5 Romantic movies for Valentine’s Day

Movies for valentinesday

It’s Valentine’s Day, which means that millions of people express their love for each other. When it comes to movies there is a huge supply of romantic movies, so it only seems the right time to share five of my favorite romantic movies. With a twist.

When Harry Met Sally

When Harry Met Sally
Woody Allen’s Annie Hall is often named as the ultimate romantic comedy and even though the movie has had a big impact, it never managed to win me over. When Harry Met Sally on the other hand is to me of of the best romantic comedies ever made. It is a movie I could not leave out of this list.

Lost in Translation

Lost in Translation
This movie, which you might think does not fit on this list, to me feels like a realistic view of a relationship, of people connecting and having to restrain themselves because of the sitatuion they are in. The story about a well-known actor and the wife of a photographer who together explore Japanese society might not be for everyone, but the chemistry between Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson is convincing and their last scene together is just ingeious.

Once

once
Once is, just like Lost in Translation, a movie which is different. A street musician (Glen Hansard) and a woman (Markéta Irglová) meet each other and connect through music, which slowly grows. Whether that can grow in to something more is the question because they both carry some emotional baggage. With its extremely strong soundtrack (which I still listen to after so many years) it is a movie which stays with you. The two main actors had a relationship in real life (and also formed a band) and as you are watching this you feel that connection. It’s a romantic movie covered by music.

(500) Days of Summer

500 days of summer
Being in love and finding the right person. It’s a subject which many movies have been made about. This movie interprets it in its own unique way. Do you need “sparkles” to start a relationship or is it just about taking a chance with someone you think is interesting? The movie has, just like love, something magical. At the same time it is very realistic as well, which is why I connected with it. With beautiful performances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, lots of humor and drama it is a movie which manages to move its viewer.

Before Sunrise

before sunrise
This movie perfectly captures the magic of a first encounter. Thanks to fantastic and naturalistic acting by both Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke you care for their characters, Celine en Jesse. The end of the movie makes you fantasize about what will happen with these two and the two sequels ((Before Sunset and Before Midnight) show how it developed further.

    • Yeah and the music is so awesome. Something almost all these movies have in common is that you can really feel that strong bond the two characters have and that is why I love them so much.

  1. I just posted my V-day list and one of these made mine as well. I highly recommend Return to Me, Nostra, it’s grossly overlooked but it deserved to be seen.

  2. Great choices all. I haven’t seen “Once”, but I saw the Broadway Show and really enjoyed it. I liked that it was not the standard Hollywood/Broadway ending.

  3. I ended up watching 500 Days of Summer with my wife on Valentines Day. It does have some romantic aspects but a lot of it is about the ups and downs of relationships. It had been a while since I watched it, great movie!

    • And I can completely understand why it is. Translation isn’t for everyone, which I completely understand. Give Once a chance and let me know what you think of it.
