The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) – Review

Review The Cloverfield Paradox
The promotion of new movies has become very predictable. Months in advance you can see the first set photos, followed by teasers, different trailer versions and the stars appearing in talk shows near the release. I basically ignore all of it and find it an extremely tiring way to promote a product and create hype. Earlier this year Netflix proved it could be different with this film. It was originally called The God Particle and was delayed. During the Superbowl commercials Netflix premiered the trailer and also announced it would be available immediately after the game. A marketing strategy which I would love more companies using.

Review The Cloverfield Paradox

In the near future earth is struggling with an enormous energy crisis. Countries are on the brink of war and an international group of astronauts are trying to solve this issue on the space station. After various failures they seem to have found the solution, but that leads to unexpected consequences. The team will have to try to survive.

“a lot of suspense, various horror moments …”

The original Cloverfield was a pleasant surprise and its sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016 deserved a spot in my top 10 of that year. They are movies which are set in the same universe, but approach it all differently. That’s also the case here, even though there is a direct link to the first movie as it is set at the same time. The Cloverfield Paradox has clearly been inspired by the original Alien. It means a lot of suspense, various horror moments and a lot of unexpected events. It were those elements which grabbed me by the throat and managed to make me feel the survival instinct. Not all characters are great, but which her character Hamiltion, Gugu Mbatha-Raw adds a very emotional layer to the film as a mother who has lost her children and struggles with the situation she has ended up in. There is some space for humour as well, mostly by Chris O’Dowd. Fans of Lost will probably have a moment of recognition and as J.J.Abrams is a producer of the film, a little tribute doesn’t surprise. The reason you’d want to watch this are the thrills.

  1. The marketing was a stroke of genius. Sadly, I found that better than the film. I’m not one of the haters, I just found it awfully forgettable. GMR was great, but that was about it.

  2. Great post! I enjoyed this film and the marketing – like the original Cloverfield was genius. And it worked, I turned this on the minute the clock ran out during the Super Bowl. It was better than the game.
