Captain Marvel (2019) – Review

Recensie Captain Marvel
Just like the real one, the Marvel universe also continues to expand. And although Thanos movie caused a lot to change in this universe in the last Avengers movie, the ending was the first mention of a new superhero, Captain Marvel. This film tells the origin story of this character and how Nick Fury (Samuel L.Jackson) met her. Is this film a worthy addition to this universe?

Captain Marvel review

Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) is part of a military team of an alien race, the Kree. She has super powers and fights against the Skrulls, but keeps having flashbacks to a past in which she was a fighter pilot on earth. Due to circumstances she ends up on earth again and goes on a journey of discovery, trying to find out who she was and at the same time trying to find something that the Skrulls, led by Talos (Ben Mendelsohn, who is a joy to watch), are looking for.

“no punishment to watch it…”

The reason that Marvel movies are so popular is that they provide great entertainment by mixing action, humor and some drama in just the right way. Captain Marvel is no exception. The introduction of the alien world Carol lives on feels a bit too short, never giving you the feeling of what that place is like. As soon as she lands on earth though, everything kicks into gear. The film is set in the 90s, which can be seen not in the locations, but also at the soundtrack and even the look of certain characters. Samuel L. Jackson, together with Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson), have both been through the rejuvenation machine used in previous Marvel movies on Michael Douglas and Robert Downey Jr. and look exactly as they looked in the 90s. The CGI cat, Goose, is a great addition who regularly is the cause of funny moments and will be a favorite for many viewers. As Captain Marvel will be an essential part of next Avengers movie, this movie is a compulsory watch for every superhero film fan to be up to speed on her and it is no punishment to watch it. Brie Larson comes across as a powerful woman, who is able to fight anyone. In addition, the personal moments and how she deals with her past are also adequately addressed. At the end of the movie though, I did ask myself if this is the superhero who can defeat Thanos in Endgame.
