Quantum of Solace (2008)

With more than 20 James Bond movies it is one of the longest running movie series there is. The role of Bond has already been played by many different actors. Quantum of Solace is the second movie starring Daniel Craig. Is it just as good as Casino Royale?

The new direction which was chosen with Casino Royale is also used here. The movie continues where the last part finished. The influence of the Bourne trilogy on the new Bond movies is obvious. Everything is a lot more gritty and raw. It’s not all glitz and glamour. There is a very direct link with the Bourne trilogy as the second unit had Don Bradley and Alexender Witt, who both worked on The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

The action scenes are all spectacular (whether this is on foot, in a car, in the air or on a boat). Of course this is the reason you watch Bond movies. I didn’t like the story. Bond wants revenge on the death of his big love and discovers the Quantum organisation. I had the feeling that when they were making the movie they just wanted to go to the next action set piece as quickly as possible.
First i thought it was because I’ve already seen so many Bond movies. But then i was thinking about Casino Royale and i really liked that movie. The action scenes just didn’t seem to have any significant result/payoff.

At the moment it’s still unclear whether and when a new Bond movie will be made, but i hope that the story will be a lot better and that the action scenes will be on the same level as this one.

Score: 6

  1. I have very little time for the new direction of Bond, they are just not as good as the Bourne movies they so desperately want to be. I want a proper villain, some gadgets, a few laughs etc. I found Casino Royale and Quantum boring.

  2. I don’t mind the new direction. After so many movies they had to do something else. I agree that the Bourne movies do do it better.
