Dunkirk (2017) – Review

Review Dunkirk

When director Christopher Nolan releases a new movie you are more less obliged as a movie lover to go watch it as soon as you can. He’s someone who lives and breathes cinema, who won’t go near filming digitally and isn’t a fan of VOD-platforms like Netflix and the way they release movies. Besides that he also likes to do as much of the special effects practically. Although his movies are a joy to watch from a technical perspective, they sometimes feel a bit sterile. For his latest movie he wanted to bring an important seconds world war moment to the big screen: the evacuation of the troops at Dunkirk. Continue reading

Assassin’s Creed (2016) – Review

Review Assassin's creed
Games allow you as a gamer to take control of another character who can perform actions which sometimes would be impossible in the real world. That’s also the case for the Assasin’s Creed games, in which you are a member of secret group travelling through old cities, running with parcours skills across rooftops to fight the Templars. As not all games are set at the same time it introduced the element of the “present”, where a machine (the Animus) is used to allow the main character to jump into the past in order to find artefacts who have a link to the creation story which can influence humanity. With popular game series it seem inevitable that they are turned into movies and unfortunately history has shown it almost always ends up being disappointing (just think of the Warcraft movie last year). Is this one different? Continue reading

Hidden Figures (2016) – Review

Review Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures tells a story you don’t see in many films. Of course there are enough movies which are about people who are good at something and strive to be the best, but there aren’t many which tell a story about three African-American women who played a very important role in the NASA space program while the United States still had laws in place which treated them differently. Continue reading

Inferno (2016) – Review

Review Inferno

The Dan Brown books have been bestsellers for years. The way in which he manages to mix interesting historical facts with an exciting story have made him popular. I can still remember listening to an audio version of The Da Vinci Code in my car on way to work and how I sometimes would stay in my car for an extra ten minutes after arriving just to finish a chapter. Making the movie to the silver screen has been a logical one, as it is a good mix of action and mystery which you might almost compare to the Indiana Jones films but without the fedora and whip. Almost…because the first two movies, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons didn’t succeed to reach the same level as most reviews were negative. Inferno is already the third part about symbologist and art historian Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks). Third time lucky? Continue reading

Pompeii (2014) – Review

Review Pomeii

After watching the terrible The Legend of Hercules, the disaster movie Pompeii was broadcast the next day. Maybe Hercules had broken me, but I decided to give this one a chance as well, because if you have survived one sand and sandals movie why not watch another one. Even if I had strong doubts about it in advance. Would this be my second bad movie night in a row? Continue reading

The Legend of Hercules (2014) – Review

Review The Legend of Hercules

Each year there are these movies which give you this feeling “it’s probably better to skip this one”. It’s some sort of spidersense you have developed as a movielover and often that sense turns out to be correct. In 2014 the movie Hercules would be released, starring Dwayne Johnson. Not long before that suddenly this movie entered theaters. I don’t know if it was supposed to take some money away from that movie, but The Legend of Hercules looked like a B-movie. So I decided to skip it, but when it recently was shown on TV I decided to give it a chance. I’ve learned a wise lesson from that: Sometimes you just have to watch these type of movies to get a better perspective on the movies which are worth watching. Continue reading

Deepwater Horizon (2016) – Review

Bespreking Deepwater Horizon

As people we are able to look at complex problems and think of solutions. Because of that we now have technology which allows us to leave the earth, but also to have a device in our hands with which we are able to do more than we would be able to imagine just 20 years ago. It’s also impressive that we are able to build oil rigs, which are essentially very specialised ships, and get them to the middle of the sea and drill a whole in the sea floor in order to get some hidden oil out of the ground. But as is the case with all technology, things can go wrong, sometimes because of the material (just think of various rockets which didn’t manage to reach space), but often also because of human error. The consequences can be disastrous and Deepwater Horizon takes a look at the events which happened in 2010 when this went horribly wrong on this oil platform. Continue reading

Sully (2016) – Review

Review Sully

I’m sometimes surprised how fast time flies by. I can still remember the news about a plane landing on the Hudson river and that the captain, Chesley Sullenberger was considered a hero. If you would have asked me how long ago that took place I would probably answer that it was two or three years ago. I guess I’m getting old as this event took place in 2009. Clint Eastwood decided to bring this story to the big screen in the form of Sully, in which Tom Hanks stars. Continue reading

Love & Friendship (2016) – Review

Review Love & Friendship

I decided to get out of my comfort zone by watching Love & Friendship. Normally I’m not a fan of costume dramas. The setting and events rarely manage to entertain me (Amadeus being an exception), but there are times when you have to give movies a chance. This film seemed like the right choice. The reviews were very positive and as the source material, Jane Austen’s “Lady Susan” is considered a classic and this also had comedy, I expected to actually enjoy this. Continue reading
