Before Sunset (2004)

Before Sunset review in anticipation of Before Midnight

Today Before Midnight is released in the Netherlands and I’m extremely excited to see it (my ticket is already booked), so I thought it was a good moment to revisit its predecessor, just to remind myself what had happened in the previous film (although my memory was quite clear on it). Although i can’t say yet that the “Before trilogy” is possibly one of the strongest trilogies out there, I have the feeling that based on the quality of the previous two movies it is a safe statement. But first my thoughts on the second movie, set in Paris, Before Sunset. Continue reading

Darwin’s Nightmare (2004)

Review of the documentary Darwin's Nightmare

Do you ever eat fish from lake Victoria, located in Tanzania? Since 500 tons of fish are caught each day, which feeds two million people, chances are that you could have. The lake was once a rich environment with hundreds of species of fish, but because of the introduction of one big predatory fish, the Nile perch, many species disappeared. This huge fish is now caught, cut up and sent all over the world to be consumed. You might not know the story behind what gets onto your plate, but as this Oscar nominated documentary shows, you should. Continue reading

Keane (2004)

review Keane

The loss of someone can be devestating and it has had its effect on William Keane (Damian Lewis). He has lost his 7 year old daughter at a bus station a while ago and regularly returns to the place with a news clipping to ask people if they have seen her. He replays the situation constantly hoping to find a new clue to find out where his daughter might be. Continue reading

Steamboy (2004)

Steamboy (2004) review

Steam. You might think the good old days when it was used to propel trains and boats are over and that it’s a technology of the past, but you’d be mistaken as it’s still used in nuclear powerplants to get the generators going. To me it’s amazing to think that such an old idea is still in use today. Steamboy is an anime in which steam is seen as the future and can be used for progress. Continue reading

Primer (2004)

There are some movies, which you have to see several times in order to start understanding their stories. Examples of this are Donnie Darko and Memento. Some people call these “mindfuck” movies, as you’ll have to think quite a bit to get what the film maker wanted to say. It’s a genre which you either love or hate, as you’ll be thinking about these type of movies for days. I really love these type of movies so was looking forward to seeing Primer. Continue reading

Garden State (2004)

Zach Braff has written, directed and stars in this movie about Andrew Largeman, a man who returns to his home town after many years to attend the funeral of his mother. He almost has no contact with his father anymore, so their relationship is almost nonexistent. While he’s back he meets some of his friends he knew when he was a kid. They all think that he has become a successful actor in Hollywood, but reality is a bit different.

Since he was young his father prescribed him medicines and because of this he feels he hasn’t really lived as he experienced it all in a state where he was numb to it all.
He decides to stop taking them and meet up with another doctor to discuss the effect this might have. While he’s waiting for his appointment he meets Sam (Natalie Portman) who says she is waiting for a friend. It doesn’t take long for Andrew to find out she’s also there because of psychological issues (she’s a big liar). He gives here a ride home and the two start seeing more and more of each other. Continue reading

The Notebook (2004)

After several people advised me to see this movie, I decided to listen and watch it. The Notebook is a very romantic movie that is mainly set in the 1940’s. Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) sees Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) around town and immediately is in love with her. She’s not interested in him, but after many times of him trying to go out on a date with her, she finally agrees. The two connect with each other and are inseparable until the end of summer. Alli has to leave to go back home. The question is whether their love for each other is strong enough to survive with the distance between them. Continue reading
