Point Blank (2010)

À bout portant

I love going into a movie knowing as little as I can about it. It’s not always possible to at least have a general idea, but movies usually surprise me. Point Blank is a French movie someone recommended to me which I didn’t know anything about and that in this case was great as I wasn’t prepared for the rollercoaster it took me on. If you don’t like to know anything at all about this movie just go check it out (it’s good) and else continue reading after the jump. Continue reading

Arrietty (2010)

Studio Ghibli can turn normal situations into something special. In My Neighbour Totoro it made you believe that friendly monsters lived in trees, and in other movies that you can end up in unseen, hidden worlds (The Cat Returns or Spirited Away) and with Arrietty they try to convince us that small people live underneath our houses. They live on the things they borrow from us, which would be a perfect explanation why I have so many single socks, I guess they must be using them as sleeping bags or something. Continue reading

London Boulevard (2010)

London Boulevard isn’t the first gangster movie in which a criminal, in this case Mitchel (Colin Farrell), who has just been released out of prison want to leave his past behind him. “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in” as the Godfather reminds us. Although more of these type of movies have been made it’s alway possible to tell this in an exciting new way. Is London Boulevard capable of providing this or is it comparable to a TV dinner? Continue reading

The Happy Housewife (2010)

The arrival of a baby can have a big impact on someone’s life (as I will be a father myself in a couple of weeks, I will be able to confirm this pretty soon).
Former stewardess Lea (Carice van Houten) is a housewife who lives in a beautiful house while her husband Harry (Waldemar Torenstra) makes his living as an architect. Although Lea isn’t too excited about the idea of having a baby, she does become pregnant. Once the baby is born her world collapses. She sees the little boy as a threat to her happy life and has a nervous breakdown, which gets so bad that the baby is in danger. This is enough reason for Harry to take action and make sure that Lea gets some time to gets her thoughts together. Continue reading

13 Assasins (2010)

When you are talking about samurai movie there of course is only on movie against which you measure other ones, Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai in which a small village has to be defended by a couple of samurai warriors hired by the village.
The story of 13 Assasins is slightly different: an evil lord, Naritsugu Matsudaira, reigns with an iron fist and isn’t afraid of using mutilation and rape to make everyone fear him. He’s about to climb on the political ladder which could have a big impact on the land. The samurai decide that he has to be stopped and they devise a plan to assassinate him. Continue reading

Lemmy (2010)

If you are a big rock fan, you will immediately think of Motörhead when you hear the name Lemmy. For those that don’t know the band, there is a big chance that you do know their most famous song, “The Ace of Spades”. Motörhead is also known as the loudest band on earth and although I have not verified this myself (in not my type of music) I heard from friends that earplugs are a necessity at their concerts. This documentary tries to give the viewer a look into the life of its lead singer. Does he live as loud as his music? Continue reading
