Faster (2010)

Dwayne Johnson has managed to build quite a career for himself. After his initial fame as The Rock he made a succesful leap into movies. Initially these were roles in action movies like The Scorpion King and The Rundown, but he has also shown that he’s good at doing comedic roles in films like The Tooth Fairy, Be Cool and The Other Guys.
With Faster he returns to his roots with a “hard as nails” action movie Continue reading

The Man From Nowhere (2010)

I’ve been watching quite a lot of Korean movies lately and with almost every movie I’m pleasantly surprised by its quality. They have strong stories, are usually quite unpredictable and not comparable to the big Hollywood productions. Is The Man From Nowhere another movie which didn’t disappoint? Continue reading

The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008)

Nope, it’s not a typo, this movie is really called The Good The Bad The Weird. It’s got nothing to do with Sergio Leone and you won’t see Clint Eastwood acting in it. Despite this it is very clear that The Good, The Bad and The Ugly has had a big influence on this Korean Western. South Korea has a big movie industry and manages to deliver some great quality film like Old Boy. Is this western just as good? Continue reading

True Grit (2010)

Through the years the brother Coen have managed to create an impressive body of work. It’s an impressive list with movies like Fargo, No Country For Old Men, Burn After Reading, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Big Lebowski. They are all very unique films and the brothers manage to put their own unique stamp on them, which makes them stand out from other movies. True Grit is their next movie and is a remake of True Grit made in 1969 starring John Wayne. Continue reading

Merantau (2009)

It is well-known that Indonesia has a strong martial arts tradition. The most famous fighting style is Pencak Silat, which is a collection of various techniques. With Merantau director Gareth Evans shows that Pencak Silat is a good choice to use for this martial arts film. Merantau is the result. When a boy has to become a man there is a tradition in Indonesia that he leaves his parents to search for life experience and become succesful before he returns home again. This is called Merantau. Can this movie compete with other martial arts movies made in China and Thailand? Continue reading

The Brothers Bloom (2009)

The Brothers Bloom is a movie which, when it was out, almost saw at the cinema. I don’t know why, but I ended up watching The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I completely forgot about this movie until a friend of mine mentioned it and told me it was a movie I had to see. As he doesn’t exactly has the same taste in movies (he liked Smokin Aces 2 and Operation Endgame for example) I wasn’t sure I would like this one, but decided to give it a chance. Continue reading

Machete (2010)

When Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez were making the Grindhouse movies (Death Proof and Planet Terror), they wanted to show some fake trailers between the movies. One of those trailers was Machete, which was about a Mexican who was hired to kill someone, but finds out it’s a trap and as a result is hunted by a lot of people. Time for him to take revenge on those responsible.

The trailer turned out to be so popular (I really liked it as well when I first saw it) that Rodriguez got a lot of questions about it. People actually wanted to see the movie so he decided to make a feature length film of it. Is the movie just as much fun as the trailer or shouldn’t Rodriguez have bothered? Continue reading

Aliens (1986)

The original Alien movie is a masterpiece, which I’ve awarded a 10. I liked it so much because of the tense situation the crew of the Nostromo ends up in. The spaceship was made up of narrow corridors and an unknown enemy that was slowly taking out all crew members. So I was really looking forward to seeing Aliens, as I wanted to see more of those tense situations. Continue reading

The Town (2010)

After the fantastic Gone Baby Gone (which I gave an 8 ) Ben Affleck is back with his second movie in the director’s chair. Just like that movie, this movie is also set in Boston, where Affleck grew up. During this movie a lot of bank heists take place in the city and Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck), James Coughlin (Jeremy Renner), Albert ‘Gloansy’ Magloan (Slaine) and Desmond Elden (Owen Burke) are one of the gangs responsible for them. These bank robberies are meticulously planned and the gang is very precise and professional in their execution. They wear latex gloves, are unrecognisable because of their masks and destroy any evidence that could be used against them (like putting the harddisks that are used for the surveillance cameras in the microwave) Continue reading
