I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK (2006)

If you are even remotely familiar with Korean cinema, then I’m sure you have heard or have seen movies directed by Chan-wook Park. Joint Security Area, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Lady Vengeance and Oldboy are all very good movies which all dealt with pretty dark subject matter. Looking at the title of this movie you might already guess that this movie is a whole different beast and you are right. It feels like a movie which could have been made by Michael Gondry as it has some of the same unique qualities. Continue reading

Sucker Punch (2011)

When I first heard about this movie I thought it sounded pretty interesting. A movie with dragons, zombie nazis, samurai, robots, helicopter, beautiful women and action sounded very good. After watching about 10 seconds of the trailer I stopped watching it as I knew I just had to see this movie. I went to see it as soon as it came out. Question is whether this film is just as fantastic as it sounds? Continue reading

The Great Yokai War (2005)

Takashi Miike is known as a controversial filmmaker with his extremely violent movies, like Ichi the Killer. It’s not a movie I have seen myself as I don’t enjoy watching shocking things just to shock. So it was a conscious decision not to see it. The Great Yokai War is also made by him and is supposed to be a movie for kids. Did he manage to succeed? Continue reading

Alice in wonderland (2010)

After remaking Charlie and the chocolate factory, Tim Burton, using his typical look and dark humour (which i thought was not as good as the previous version) has done the same for Alice in wonderland. Does the movie with the white rabbit disappear down the black hole or does Burton manage to create a real wonderland? Continue reading

My IMDB tens – ET the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

E.T. was one of the big phenomena during the eigthies. It’s a movie which i remember well, as is was the first movie that made me shed a tear when i was a little boy. Watching the movie again after many years it felt like a warm blanket. I remembered so much of this movie that i was looking forward to each next scene to see if it was just as much fun as i remembered. I decided to watch the original version and not the rereleased 2002 version where various CGI shots were added. E.T. feels more real to me when moving around clumsily compared to a smooth moving computer generated being. Continue reading

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)

Terry Gilliam has already proved that he knows how to create believable worlds (for example Brazil or 12 Monkeys). In the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus he proves this again. The story is about Dr. Parnassus who has made a bet with the devil and to do win it he’s travelling through Great Britain with a show. With an old-fashioned play he tries people to step into his imaginarium. When a person steps in he will be able to see all the things he is imagining. So dream worlds are created for that person Continue reading
