This is Spinal Tap (1984)

When you first see the title of this movie you would immediately think that this is a documentary about them touring, being to watch what happens behind and off stage in the lives of the members of Spinal Tap. But when you actually start watching it you’ll find out that it’s not a serious movie, but a mockumentary. The band members are interviewed and tell a lot of crazy stories (which you know can’t be true, like why they had so many different drummers and how they kept dying) Continue reading

West Coast Theory (2009)

The West Coast has managed to produce a lot of big rap artists and classical albums. N.W.A., Ice Cube, Dr.Dre, Snoop Dogg and Cypress Hill are just a few examples. The sounds are unique and can also be heard on records by artists who didn’t grow up there like Eminem or 50 Cent. There’s a certain vibe that is difficult to describe in words, when you hear it you just know that it is that sound, often a laid back vibe to it, but other times it can also be raw as hell. West Coast Theory is a documentary about the producers behind many well known hits and tries to show the different aspects of music production. Continue reading

Scratch (2001)

I’ve been listening to hiphop for many years and when I heard about this documentary about scratching I was very curious to see it. I’ve seen hiphop change over the years, but it is the DJ who has been responsible for the creation and development of this music, even though MCs now define it. The documentary shows where it originated and how DJing developed itself through the years. Continue reading

Crazy Heart (2009)

There are a lot of movies about the lives of musicians. These can be based on real artists (Johny Cash (Walk the line), Edith Piaf (La môme), Ray Charles (Ray)) or made up (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story). This movie is about a made up character, the artist Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges), an old musician who is experiencing the fall of his career. Continue reading

This is it (2009)

This is it is a movie which you watch with mixed feelings. I saw the movie in the cinemas last year and watched it again at home this week. The first feeling i had when this movie would be made was that they wanted to profit off the dead of Jackson. That feeling disappeared after seeing it. You will be amazed to see how Jackson wanted everything to be perfect for his show. The music had to perfect, everybody has to know all their dance moves and nothing can go wrong. The movie clearly shows what an amazing show it would have been. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. Continue reading
