Love & Friendship (2016) – Review

Review Love & Friendship

I decided to get out of my comfort zone by watching Love & Friendship. Normally I’m not a fan of costume dramas. The setting and events rarely manage to entertain me (Amadeus being an exception), but there are times when you have to give movies a chance. This film seemed like the right choice. The reviews were very positive and as the source material, Jane Austen’s “Lady Susan” is considered a classic and this also had comedy, I expected to actually enjoy this. Continue reading

Francofonia (2015) – Review

Review Francofonia

How far along are you with your Blindspot movies of this year? Although this movie wasn’t part of my selection (and I have to confess I still have to watch more of my Blindspot films than I should) it does have a link with them. This movie has been directed by Aleksandr Sokurov, who also was responsible for Russian Ark. Which was 99-minute one shot film which used 2000 extras. Impressive to hear, but the film itself wasn’t for me. In my own words: “has no plot and no character development. The actors never felt convincing and as there isn’t any focus storywise the camera just roams around.”. It’s always possible that one movie from a specific director isn’t your cup of tea, so Francofonia was the second chance. Would it be the final one? Lees verder

The Assassin (2015) – Review

Review The Assassin

In all aspects of life compatibility is very important. In you personal relationships you search for people who complement you and with whom you can get along, when it comes to technology you want your laptop or phone to work with accessories you get for it. But it’s also something which is present when it comes to movies. It’s the reason why one person is praising Batman v Superman or Suicide Squad and someone else absolutely hates it. For me I had compatibility issues with this film, which generally was praised in review and which won Hou Hsiao-hsien the price for best director at the 68th Cannes film festival. After struggling through this movie though it’s really hard for me to understand why. Continue reading

Hitman: Agent 47 (2015) – Review

Review Hitman 47

There are exactly two things I remember about the Hitman movie from 2007:
1. Timothy Olyphant played the hitman
2. That that’s the only thing I can remember about the film
And after seeing this movie, which I assume is a reboot, I am certain that I will be saying the same thing about this movie in a couple of months as I will probably have forgotten everything about it. Continue reading

High-Rise (2015) – Review

Review High-Rise

Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston) is successful doctor who, after the death of his sister, moves into a prestigious new apartment building just outside London, designed by Anthony Royal (Jeremy Irons). It is a modern building which is modern and has many extras. It has a pool, a gym and a supermarket everyone is able to use. But the building also houses various people from many walks of life. The top floors is where the upper class lives while the people from lower classes live at the bottom of the building. As becomes clear from the opening that separation eventually has led to chaos as it looks almost apocalyptic. Continue reading

The 5th Wave (2016) – Review

Review The 5th Wave

After a couple of big Young Adult franchises like Twilight, The Hunger Games, Divergent and The Maze Runner which were all successful other new potential ones keep trying to repeat that success. The 5th Wave is another one that tries. But the question is whether The 5th Wave is different enough to stand out within this genre. Continue reading

A Swedish Love Story (1970)

Review A Swedish Love Story

After recently watching both A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence and Songs from the Second Floor by Roy Andersson, I was interested in seeing some of his older work. A Swedish Love Story was recently re-released and the title interested me. Might this be a movie that’s similar to something like Before Sunrise? It’s a bout two teenagers, Annika and Pär who fall in love during a hot summer. Continue reading

Fantastic Four (2015)

Recensie Fantastic Four

In recent years Marvel has built a reputation when it comes to superhero movies. Not only are they financially very successful, the average quality also is very high. The audience is looking forward to new superhero movies in the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” and although the Marvel logo is the thing that appears on screen this is not a film that was made by Marvel Studios. The rights to the Fantastic Four are in fact owned by 20th Century Fox (like Sony owns the rights to Spiderman) and to ensure that they would not fall back to Marvel made a new film. Not a third part to the amusing (though not exceptional) first two films, but a reboot. Continue reading
