Mother (2009)

The original title of this Korean movie is Madeo, which can be translated into two meanings, both mother and murder are possible as the characters in the language are the same. Hye-ja Kim stars in this movie, in which her son Yoon Do-joon (Bin Won) is being suspected of a crime. As Yoon Do-joon has some mental issues, it’s hard for her to find out if he really has committed the crime. As a mother she’s willing to do anything to find out the truth and get her son out of jail. Dwayne Johnson has managed to build quite a career for himself. After his initial fame as The Rock he made a succesful leap into movies. Initially these were roles in action movies like The Scorpion King and The Rundown, but he has also shown that he’s good at doing comedic roles in films like The Tooth Fairy, Be Cool and The Other Guys.

The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008)

Nope, it’s not a typo, this movie is really called The Good The Bad The Weird. It’s got nothing to do with Sergio Leone and you won’t see Clint Eastwood acting in it. Despite this it is very clear that The Good, The Bad and The Ugly has had a big influence on this Korean Western. South Korea has a big movie industry and manages to deliver some great quality film like Old Boy. Is this western just as good? Continue reading

Handsome Harry (2009)

Harry Sweeney (Jamey Sheridan) is an ex-navy officer who has started his own company in a small town when he left the navy. He has been very succesful and is about to sell his company to retire. He receives a phone call from an old friend, Thomas Kelley (Steve Buscemi) asking him to visit and he agrees. Thomas is very ill and knows he will die soon. They start talking about the past and talk about a subject which they have been silent about for years. Together with some other friends they committed a crime. As his dying wish Thomas asks Harry to find the victim of their crime and apologise to him. For Harry it’s and unforgettable and painful journey into his own past. Continue reading

Machete (2010)

When Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez were making the Grindhouse movies (Death Proof and Planet Terror), they wanted to show some fake trailers between the movies. One of those trailers was Machete, which was about a Mexican who was hired to kill someone, but finds out it’s a trap and as a result is hunted by a lot of people. Time for him to take revenge on those responsible.

The trailer turned out to be so popular (I really liked it as well when I first saw it) that Rodriguez got a lot of questions about it. People actually wanted to see the movie so he decided to make a feature length film of it. Is the movie just as much fun as the trailer or shouldn’t Rodriguez have bothered? Continue reading

Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)

What’s the most important thing in life and how far would you go for money? Those are the central questions in the Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
Humphrey Bogart is Dobbs, a man who lives the life of a bum in Mexico. How he ended up there is not made really clear. He begs for money whenever he sees other Americans so he can continue living. He doesn’t seem to have a goal in his life. After getting his hands on some money he ends up being able to pay for a roof above his head for a night. There he meets an old gold digger named Cody (Walter Huston) who tells him that there’s gold to be found in the dry desert mountains. Together with a friend he met during a small job he did he decides to buy the necessary equipment to head out to the desert and start searching for gold. Together with Cody the three head out of town to begin their search. Continue reading

Old Boy (2003)

Just imagine walking on the street, being kidnapped and being held in a normal apartment. You are free to move around the apartment and do you own things, but there is no way to leave. Every day you receive food through a hole in the door and every night you are forced to fall asleep as gas is injected into the room. You have no idea why you are there and how long it will be until you are released. Days turn into weeks, weeks slowly turn into years. What would you do if you are suddenly released after 15 years? Seven Samurai (1954)

Akira Kurosawa is one of Japan’s most famous directors. His influence on other directors has been very big, someone like George Lucas was inspired by Kurosawas movies and the Magnificent Seven is a movie that is based on Seven Samurai. With this movie Kurosawa was the first to use various techniques in one movie. Examples are the shot of the bad guys appearing on top of a hill or the slow motion shots.
Seven Samurai is set in feudal Japan. When the villagers of a small town find out that there is a gang about to raid the village just when the crops are harvested, they decide to search for samurai that can defend their village. Continue reading
