Unknown (2011)

Sometimes it’s nice if you are able to watch a movie that you don’t know anything about. This was the case for me with Unknown. As I liked Liam Neeson in Taken I gave this a chance as well.

Dr. Martin Harris (Liam Neeson) is visiting Berlin together with his wife Liz (January Jones) Berlijn to give a speech during a congress about biology. He is involved in a car crash and ends up in a coma. When he awakens he returns to his hotel to find out that no one seems to know him anymore, not even his own wife who is married to a man who has the same name as he has. Did Martin go crazy or can he find the evidence to prove his identity?

Martin ends up on the street without having an idea on how to tackle his problem. When he finds out that he’s being watched he has to make sure he isn’t get caught and possibly killed. He decides to hire a private detective (a great role by Bruno Ganz who most will know from his role as Hitler in Die Untergang) to find out what is going on. Turns out that it is a lot more then he’s expecting.

If you were to compare this movie to another one the closest thing would probably be the Bourne movies. The setting is about the same, there is a lot of handheld camerawork and it’s about someone who is not sure about his identity.

Even though Liam Neeson, almost 60 now, is a lot older than Matt Damon he shows that he’s able to do the same things, which results in an exciting movie. Unknown is a movie that has a lot of surprises and action and was a joy to watch.

Score: 9

  1. WOW that is a good score for this film. I am glad you enjoyed it. It is nice to see.

For me though I found the reveal a bit of a let down. The first half of the film was great and I loved the suspense and build, almost Hitchcock like.

Nicely written review though my friend

You are right Neeson is a god doing what he does when most are drawing an old aged pension

  2. I think it’s great to watch a film that you have no idea about; because then you have no biased opinions at all and take the film as it is. I recently put Unknown on my Love Film list, and I am looking forward to seeing it. All I knew is that Liam Neeson was in it, and it’s set in Berlin (I lived in Berlin for 2 years, so it’s always great to see familiar places in movies); now I know Bruno Ganz is in it – cool!

Your review makes me want to see it more!

    • I always try to know as little as possible about a movie, which can get hard sometimes with all the talk on twitter and movie sites, but usually manage to do so. Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.
