The Monday Question: Amusement park!

This past weekend I really enjoyed a weekend away with the family and spent it at one of the biggest amusement parks in the Netherlands, The Efteling. It is quite big and has a lot of fun things to do, including a fairy tale forest, various playgrounds, entertaining rides through various environments and several rollercoasters. As we also stayed at a house we rented from the amusement park the TV had a themed channel. It showed the making of one of the wooden rollercoasters. The special thing about it is that it’s two rollercoasters next to each other, where you can see the other people and the two are racing each other to the end. A very cool ride, but it wouldn’t be The Efteling if they hadn’t themed it. The story behind it is that it represents the fight of a boy against a dragon, which is translated as a fight between fire and water. They even had made a short film about it which I wouldn’t know about if I would have just went into the ride. It made me think about turning rides into movies. Pirates of the Caribbean is a well-known example, but there are probably more. So this week’s question:

Are there any amusement park rides you would like to be turned into a movie?

  1. I can’t think of a single one. Mostly because the theme park rides I usually go on and like are rollercoasters that are over in the blink of an eye!

There’s a great Saw themed rollercoaster over here at Thorpe Park. Probably the best filmed turned ride I’ve seen. Though can’t think of any other ‘coaster that could be turned into a film.

  2. Difficult question. Maybe Thunder Mountain (Walt Disney World). It go be a heist movie with the train at some point loosing control down “Thunder Mountain”.

  3. I love amusement parks! Hmmm, I don’t know what movie I’d like to be turned into rides though I’d love to visit the Harry Potter rides in Universal Studios in Florida πŸ˜€

  4. I’m not really a fan of movies inspired by theme park attractions, but the first Pirates is a great fun, so it is possible. Being a big fan of theme parks, I do have to respond, though. I’m looking forward to seeing the second attempt to make one based on The Haunted Mansion. I believe Del Toro is making that one. The bar was set pretty low with the Eddie Murphy film.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a Space Mountain movie, though it would probably end up being a generic sci-fi film. That’s the challenge with this type of movie; how do you really make it original? I would enjoy seeing films set in theme parks; I’m curious to see ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW, but I think Disney is going to squash it.

    • It seems that once Eddie Murphy and a theme park are included the movie will not be good (same with the third Beverly Hills Cop movie).

I don’t mind a generic Sci Fi film! In my opinion not enough sci fi movies are made πŸ™‚
