Monsters Inc. (2001)

After recently watching Monsters University I just had to revisit the movie which made me fall in love with its world, Monsters Inc. Although I remembered most of the story it was good to see it again and at the same time see if the two movies are consistent (the quick answer: not entirely)

For those who don’t know anything about the movie (you should stop reading and go watch it immediately), it introduces the world of Monsters Inc, which is a scare factory. The entire world runs on the energy which is stored when a little kid screams (when they see the monsters that go into the bedrooms). The team of Mike and Sully are the best ones out there, harvesting the most power. Although the monsters are scaring the children, they are very careful because they believe children are toxic if you touch them, which can be deadly. When one child, named Boo, enters their world she ends up with Mike and Sully who slowly learn a lot more. Not only about children, but also about something secret going on at the factory.

Because I had recently seen Monsters University it was easy to compare this movie to the prequel. This movie is the better one as it has more heart to it and way more funny moments. There are small things which stood out as inconsistent. In the beginning of the movie Mike says something to Sully about him being envious when they were in the 4th grade. Then there is the scene in which new scarers are trained at Monsters Inc. It is clear that these scarers would be experienced after getting and education at Monsters University. But these are not faults of this movie, but of its prequel. Monsters Inc. is one of my favorite Pixar movies which I can revisit endlessly. It is a timeless animation classic.

  1. What I enjoyed watching the sequel, was spotting all the little nods to Monsters Inc – the “winds of change” line gets a look in, which was hilarious. My daughter and I have spent a great number of weekends watching, rewatching, and rewatching again, this fabulous film. A 9 seems quite an appropriate score.
