Sex Tape (2014)

Review Sex Tape

Sex sells, which isn’t a surprise. Whole advertising campaigns are based on it and some directors (Michael Bay is the first one I thought of) gladly show the female curves and tough men every opportunity they get. When it comes to comedies it has also been a subject that has been used a lot. From the exploitation movies of the seventies to movies like Porky’s during the eighties all the way to the Apatow movies of the last couple of years. Sex Tape is now playing in the cinema and is very clear about its story. During the last couple of years many celebrity sex tapes have surfaced and there are a lot of couples who decide they want to spice things up and record their love-making.

This is also the case for Annie (Cameron Diaz) and Jay (Jason Siegel). Before the couple had their two kids they shared the bed a lot (amongst many other places), but currently that bed only is used for sleeping. Sex has become something which isn’t spontaneous at all and has to be planned in. The only thing they have time for is their job and making sure the kids are taken care of.

When the two of them are home alone one night they have a bright idea to breathe new life into their sex: They will make a sex tape using their iPad. It results in a three-hour movie and the two go to sleep feeling satisfied. The next day Jay makes a shocking discovery when he finds out that the movie they recorded has been automatically synced with other iPads they gave away. The two have to try to localise all the iPads and erase them before others see what they haven been up to.

Review Sex Tape

For a movie which is about sex (it has it in the title) it is a very tame one. Except for some ass there isn’t a lot of nakedness to be seen and there aren’t as many shocking moments as you might expect. Everything is played extremely safe. Cameron Diaz plays a role I’ve seen her do many times before so no surprises there either. The movie has a couple of OK cameos (Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper and Rob Lowe) during the search for the iPads, but the actual search was suprisingly short and doesn’t result in many jokes that connected. If you are looking for a comedy with sex in it I’d suggest you watch Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno instead, which is funnier and a better story.

  1. I haven’t heard much good from this movie. My husband is in IT and was talking about the impossibility of the tape “syncing to the other iPads.” Lol, I don’t know all the details, but it doesn’t surprise me.

Also, Michael Bay was the first director I thought of too when I think of “sex” or “exploitation” in the movies πŸ™‚

    • And for good reason. Well, they explain the syncing because of a special app he had installed, so I guess that is possible.

Hahaha, Michael Bay sure has made a name for himself in that respect πŸ˜‰

    • Yeah, it wasn’t my choice to see it, but sometimes you have to make your significant other happy by joining them to see a movie you wouldn’t pick yourself πŸ˜‰
