The Equalizer (2014)

Review The Equalizer

Denzel Washington is one of those actors who you will know is responsible for solid performances in entertaining movies. Of course there will always be a couple which are weaker (2 Guns for example), but it is an actor who always gives his best. The Equalizer is his latest film.

Review The Equalizer

Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) seems to be an ordinary man. He lives in an extremely well-kept house, works at a local hardware store and follow a set daily rhythm. In the evening he always visits the same bar, puts everything in the exact same spot and reads his books. Another person who regularly visits the place is prostitute Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz) and the two regularly chat. Something happens though which makes it clear that McCall is anything but a normal guy and that behind his tranquility there is an extremely dangerous, highly effective killing machine willing to fight for justice, even if that means going head to head with the Russian mob. The mafia of course fights back and uses Teddy (Marton Csokas) to eliminate McCall. The result is a battle in which both parties are not willing to back down and in which they seem to be evenly matched.

Review The Equalizer

The Equalizer is a very enjoyable action thriller, filled with extreme violence, which is beautifully shot (even if that sounds ridiculous). Before a fight start we see how McCall sees every detail around him and uses them all in his advantage. Washington is very good, but Csokas also manages to shine in every scene he appears in. The story is easily compared to movies like Die Hard, Death Wish or even Rambo, in which one man is there to make sure that justice prevails and that the bad guys are stopped. Here that idea results in a very enjoyable movie which you should give a shot.

  1. Hey Nostra! Im curious about this one. To be honest, I’m holding out much hope but your review has changed my mind somewhat. It’s hard to go wrong with Denzel, of course.

  2. “beautifully shot”…i think that is a most appropriate description. I liked this and am glad you did as well. I was surprised at the amount of time Moretz was in the film given the trailer’s depiction of her use for the plot. But I liked this film far more than recent Denzel films! Great review.
