Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)

Review Transformers Age of Extinction

Are reviews responsible for the success of a movie? If you look at the ones for the Transformers movies you have to conclude that they are completely useless. According to Rotten Tomatoes half of the review for the first movie were positive, but after it the percentage quickly dropped (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen 19%, Transformers: Dark of the Moon 36%). This movie only managed to get 18% of positive reviews. Despite that the movies have been a huge success. Does this mean that the reviewers don’t know how to review or have they lost their feeling with their audience? I have to admit that I don’t go to the cinema to watch these movies, but that at home I do consider them “guilty pleasures”.

The story in general doesn’t matter in these movies (at least I think so). Although I have seen the last three parts I can’t remember any plot details about them. It all comes down that the Autobots have to stop some bad robots. This time Shia Labeouf is replaced by Mark Wahlberg, who plays an inventor who is the human factor in the story. Stanley Tucci is really enjoyable as head of a tech company and shows his interpretation of Steve Jobs. He regularly is responsible for the funniest moments in the movie.

The reason for the popularity of these movies is the spectacle they bring and Michael Bay delivers that here once more. Although the most spectacular moment in this movie doesn’t compare to the worm from the previous movies cutting through a building the visual side is spectacular. With its length of two hours the film is way too long though. Something which also really disappoints is the picture that was used to promote the film shows Optimus Prime sitting on a robot dinosaur. Within the actual movie those characters are only in it for a few mintues. I can completely understand the negative reviews this movie has been getting and even I wouldn’t call this a good movie, but again I have enjoyed watching it again.

  1. Michael Bay delivers a take-away meal that smells good yet has very little filling… but still leaves you feeling bloated and fat. I agree with your review entirely. What felt like 7 hours in and Im sat there wondering where on earth the Dinobots were? Right at the end they awkwardly turn up for 5 minutes until the disappointing climax. I felt like I was slowly turning into a fossil watching this… Ive learnt to expect nothing more from Mr Bay now though. Great review Nostra! 🙂

    • Yeah, shame though because he is capable to make interesting movies. I liked Bad Boys, Pain & Gain and The Rock….it just seems when it involves CGI he goes crazy with it.

    • Hahahaha, yeah know what you mean although this had its entertaining moments. Maybe it is best to just watch the action scenes in parts, so you don’t get overloaded by them 😉

  2. I live in a house full of Transformers fans so I understand the appeal. I just find it tedious to the point of being painful to watch. Certain movies are review-proof and this franchise certainly is.
