Let’s Be Cops (2014)

review let's be cops

Is it possible to take only a small premise, in this case two guys pretending to be cops, and turn that into a feature length movie? My expectations were that it would quickly into a way too long drawn out sketch that spread itself too thin and not worth watching. But as I’m always curious I had to find out if this movie really was what I was expecting.

Justin (Damon Wayans Jr.) and Ryan (Jake Johnson) are two friends who decide to dress as cops when they are invited to a costumed party. After seeing how people respond to their outfits they decide to make the most of their outfits and have fun with it. They keep taking it further and further, with Justin slowly making his concerns known, until they run into a dangerous criminal named Mossi (James D’Arcy), who is asking protection money from local enterpreneurs. Justin and Ryan have gotten themselves in more trouble than they realize.

Even though my expectations were extremely low, this movie actually managed to surprise me in a positive way. ns Jr. and Johnson have a convincing chemistry and the various supporting characters were responsible for a lot of laughs. I never felt that the joke was going on too long or repeating itself, resulting in a very enterntaining, funny film.

  1. This was one of the best surprises of the year for me. I laughed so hard. Agree they have great chemistry, and I also love the background of how they pretend to be cops because they felt like a failure in the age 30

  2. I didn’t think Let’s Be Cops was much more than a funny buddy comedy. I felt like the plot was pretty thin, but there definitely some laughs. Nice review, Nostra!
