My favorite podcasts

Favorite podcasts best

As a movie lover I obviously devour a lot movies, but besides watching them I also like listening to conversation about them (and some other subjects). According to Wikipedia a podcast “is a digital medium that consists of an episodic series of audio or digital radio, subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device.” In other words, it’s an on demand radio show.

PATo listen to them I use Podcast Addict. It’s an app with a lot of functionality, making easy to subscribe to them, have it automatically download the latest episodes and remove them when listened. Because the list of podcasts I listen to has grown quite a bit through the years the result has been that the amount of music I listen to has become a lot less.

These are my favorites (click on the logo to listen to them):

Filmjunk Podcast

Filmjunk podcast

One of the oldest movie related podcasts around. The fun thing about this show is that it’s being recorded by a couple of friends in Canada. The end result is a podcast about movies which is intermingled with personal stories having nothing to do with the medium. It gives the show a strong personality and makes for some entertaining listening.

I Was There Too

I was there too

If you are interested in finding out what happens on moviesets than I’d advice you to check out I Was There Too. Every week the show’s host Matt Gourley has one or more guests who were extras on the set of a specific film. They talk about their experiences and how the stars of the movies acted outside of filming. It shows you what goes on and you get to hear stories you normally wouldn’t hear. Movies include There Will Be Blood, Speed, The Untouchables ,Aliens and many more.

Maltin on Movies

Maltin on movies

Leonard Maltin is a well-known American movie critic (who some might now from his many appearances in DVD extras where he tells something about the film) who, together with Baron Vaughn picks a different movie related subject (eg. Biopics, Sequels, Food Movies), talk about it and gives three examples: One good, one bad and one a lot of people probably don’t know, but should check out.

The Canon

The Canon

Devin Faraci and Amy Nicholson pick a movie (or sometimes do a versus) and discuss if that movie is a classic and should be addedd to “The Canon”. They usually defend opposing sides, making you think about the various aspects of a movie.

The Drill Down

The Drill Down

Besides movies I’v always been interested in technology and The Drill Down is a weekly podcast which discusses the latest news in tech and the impact it could have on society.

Reply All

Reply All

Reply All is a show about the internet. Each episode takes one subject (like “did the brother of Errol Morris invent email?” or an interview with the woman who ran Jennicam) and through interviews gives insight into it. The end result is a podcast which focusses on something different each time and I like that variation.

Serial

Serial

Season 1 of this extremely popular podcast has finished, but if you are a fan of crime documentaries than Serial is exactly that, but realised in an audio format. Show runner and journalist Sarah Koenig investigates the case of Adnan Masud Syed. Syed has been convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, but claims to be innocent. She investigates the case thoroughly. A new season of this show has already been announced.

Hollywood Babble-on

Hollywood Babble On

If you would compare this podcast to something it would probably be something like TMZ, but here everything is brought in a funny way. Director Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman praten almost weekly discuss films, geek news and people like Justin Bieber, Lindsay Lohan and Kim Kardashian. I think it is very entertiaing, with Garman impersonating many actor, but I’m pretty sure the humor might not be to everyone’s taste.

Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project

Still Untitled The Adam Savage Project

Adam Savage (Mythbusters) talks to the men form Tested.com about various subjects. The subject matter might be cooking one week, making a movie prop the next and then about camping. It’s a show where you will be able to pick up some great advice.

Mystery show

Mystery-Logo
Although this show is relatively new I’m hooked on it. Every week Starlee Kine decides to try and solve a mystery which can’t simply be done by Googling. What I like about this show is that Kine manages to get interesting personal stories from everyone she meets, even if it’s someone at a help desk.

The /Filmcast

slashfilmcast

Another movie related podcast which reviews the latest movie(s) on a weekly basis.
