The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016) – Review

Recensie The Huntsman Winter's War

The number of fairytales which have had a remake during the last couple of years in the form of a live action version has been huge. In general they are pretty fun to watch. Earlier this year The Jungle Book managed to impress, but that doesn’t mean this is the case for all of them. Snow White and the Huntsman tried to turn the classic story into a movie epic, but didn’t succeed. Now its sequel The Huntsman: Winter’s War has been out for a while and the question is whether this is a movie that needed to be made.

Review The Huntsman Winter's War
After all the negative publicity surrounding Kristen Stewart and the affair she had with the director of the first movie, she doesn’t return here. Charlize Theron and Chris Hemworth do show up again in this new film. You might wonder if the last movie didn’t tell the complete story of Snow White, and it did. That is why this movie is set before the events of the first film. It can be best described as a darker version of Frozen. It’s abotu two sisters Ravenna (Theron) and Freya (Emily Blunt), who leaves her sister after a shocking event, builds her own ice palace and doesn’t allow anyone to have feelings. So the similarities are clear. Through her story you learn how The Huntsman (Hemsworth) became so good at his job and shows his love story with Sara (Jessica Chastain).

“better than the original…”

The Huntsman: Winter’s War luckily is better than the original. The focus is, as the title suggests, about Hemworth’s character. Together with two dwarfs (played by Rob Brydon and Nick Frost) he starts searching for the magic mirror and because of that this is an ok adventure film which might not be able to reach the highs of similar movies in the genre, but isn’t hell to sit through. It offers enough drama, love, humour, action and violence to keep ou entertained. So although the movie is better than the original it wasn’t really necessary, but didn’t mind seeing it.
