What’s up, Tiger Lilly? (1966)

The movie Kung Pow is one of my favourite comedies (besides the Apatow movies, Dumb and Dumber, Coming to America and Trading Places). The concept of the movie is that they took an old chines kung fu flick, had one person dub it really badly and edit him into the movie. You either love or hate Kung Pow, there is no middle ground. Expect no logical story and very stupid, but because of it, very funny jokes.
Kung Pow was the reason i started searching for other movies which were made using the same concept and ended up with What’s up, Tiger Lilly.

Woody Allen took a Japanese spy movie called Kokusai himitsu keisatsu: Kagi no kagi and recorded new text for it. The story is about the recipe for eggsalad. Using this recipe a new country, which is on the waiting list to actually become a real country, can speed up the process. A strange story for a very weird movie. It’s interesting to see what spy movies out of Japan looked like aroudn that time. They were a lot more extreme when showing women compared to James Bond. The gadgets that we see 007 are also used, like minitiaure cameras or hidden radios.
Unfortunately the movie is not as funny as Kung Pow. The scenes in which the Loving Spooful play their music don’t fit the movie at all (which were added without Allen’s knowledge) and the number of jokes that are not funny is big. There are also bits in the movie with Woody Allen and the movie is even put on hold to show someone making shadowpuppets with his hands. I didn’t enjoy it.
I really can’t recommend this movie. If you are looking for a badly dubbed movie that will make you love, watch Kung Pow.

Score: 4
