The Breakfast Club (1985)

During the eighties there were a couple of movies that really managed to connect with the youth. Movies like Weird Science, Ferris Bueller’s day off and the Breakfast Club manage to give, beside a view into the thoughts of teenagers, a good image of the time period. All these movies were made by John Hughes, who passed away last year. For this movie he wrote the screenplay in 2 days.
The movie shows five teenagers who all have been “sentenced” to detention. They have to spend their whole saturday at school.

The principal tells them to write an essay about who they are. They have to sit in the library and are not allowed to leave their seats. The teenagers are all the typical stereotypes you would expect to see in high school movies. There’s the popular girl, the nerd, the strange girl, the tough guy who is always looking for trouble and the wrestler.

Because the teenagers are all so different from each other it’s not a surprise this leads to clashes between them, but also with the principal. During the movie you will learn why they are on detention, but also what type of personality they have and what kind of issues they have to deal with in their lives. Because the teenagers have to spend the whole day together they start to understand each other better.

At the same time the movie addresses many issue teenagers have to deal with. Things like not being understood by their parents, dealing with the pressure friends put on you, not belonging to any group or having to get good results.

After seeing the movie I really wanted to know what the actors look like now, which you can see here.

Even though the characters are all stereotype, the movie is fun to watch. The actors manage to make them interesting and together with the whole eighties vibe of the movie it is a nice movie to see.

Score: 8
