Solomon Kane (2009)

Sometimes I watch movie which I know nothing about. I hadn’t heard anything about Solomon Kane and had only seen one picture, which made it look like a western, so I was curious to see it. The movie turned out to be a movie set in England during the middle ages, so it was a far cry from my expectations.
Solomon Kane is a warrior who meets one of the devil’s helpers who tells him he is there to take him to hell. Kane doesn’t surrender and fights him in order to escape.

He is warned that it’s impossible to escape his fate, so he travels to England and decides to stop fighting and killing people. Of course it’s very predictable what happens next.

Solomon Kane feels like a big budget movie, even though I had not heard anything about it. I can’t remember any marketing for this movie in magazines or reading stories about it online. The sets are big and the movie really has the medieval atmosphere that is needed.
Of course the movie has its bad guys. The first one that shows up at the beginning at the movie was the most impressive as he really feels like a threat. The ones that follow just didn’t have that same level of being impressive. The army which the bad guy uses almost feel like it consists of soldiers that were out of a job after doing Lord of the Rings and saw a job opportunity when they heard about this movie. They aren’t orcs, but there are definitely some similarities.

Solomon Kane fights to save his soul in this film. Unfortunately the movie itself misses one. Even though the movie is not bad at any point, I constantly had the feeling that I already saw this before. The movie unfortunately doesn’t excel anywhere and feels very average.
