Requiem for a Dream (2000)

The next movie out of the IMDB top 250 which I have seen is Requiem for a Dream. I tried watching it years ago, but could not get into it and didn’t finish watching it. I just didn’t like the vibe it gave me. It’s now some years later and seeing it in the top 250 i was curious about it, so i decided to give this film another chance. I’m glad i did.

The movie deals with the effect of drugs on a couple of different people. Using drugs is usually a conscious decision, but one the characters, Sara Goldfarb, gets addicted to them without knowing it when she thinks she has a chance to appear on television.
Other see a chance to get rich of them, but don’t follow Biggies ten crack commandments and get high on their own supply.
THe two stories do have their similarities in the effect the drugs have.
Aranofsky manages to show this in an excellent way by using sped up sequences, cutting the screen in two and having the images come together sometimes and using fast cuts. These techniques make the movie stand out and improve the way he tells the story.
This film really is an example in showing the importance of editing and music besides having a good story.
The actors are excellent in this movie. I was especially impressed byEllen Burstyn and Jennifer Connelly. You really have to be in the right mood to see this movie as it’s subject matter is very serious.

Score: 9
