Passenger Side (2009)

Passenger Side is a strange movie to review. It’s about two brothers who drive through Los Angeles for a whole day in search of someone. Not too much happens during that day, expect some conversations between the two and the interaction with the people they meet. Is this movie worth watching though?

Adam Scott is Michael, who is called by his brother Tobey (Joel Bissonnette) as he needs help. Tobey’s car is broken and as it is set in L.A., not having a car is like not having oxygen. They drive around and discuss various things, like the fact that Michael still owns a black and white TV or the book he has written. Luckily the dialogs are great and it managed to hold my attention througout the film. It’s also quite funny:

Some examples:

I like the future, in fact i firmly believe it’s going to be the big next thing

I happen to like black and white, black white shows the world stripped of its makeup

Can I help you? Ehhm, yeah, actually. Do you know know a seven letter word for untrustworthy people starting with an F? Police. P-O-L-I-C-E. Close, but that is not exactly correct, but thank you, thank you!

It’s stuff like this I can really enjoy.

The combination of the dialog, the bizarre, but at the same time realistic, characters (who often only appear in one scene) make this a very fun “small” movie to watch. At the end of the movie I had some expectations about one of the characters would do, but that’s only a small remark. If you are looking for a movie that’s different from the standard Hollywood fare, then Passenger Side is highly recommended.

Score: 7
