A Dirty Carnival (2006)

A while ago I had a conversation about Korean movies on Twitter and it sparked my love for them again. It had been a while since I watched any so I wanted to watch one again and chose a good old gangster movie.

When it comes to organised crime, Byung-Doo is pretty low on the ladder. He is the leader of some local thugs, but his bosses use him for a lot of dirty work and he hardly makes enough money to take care of is mother and pay the rent of their apartment. He almost has to beg for work that pays better, but keeps getting ignored. After trying to move up he finally gets a chance to run a small casino, which gets smashed to bits by a rival gang. If you like raw fighting then this movie delivers with a scene in which a big number of gangsters fight each other with baseball bats, one where there is fighting in a moving car and where instead of guns knives are used to kill other gangsters.
The movie shows the decisions Byung-Doo has to make, which includes a tricky friendship with a former school friend who wants to make a movie about gangsters and asks him for advice and a love story with a girl he also knows from school. This is all nicely mixed together to result in a thrilling movie to watch.

If you are a fan of gangster movies (including the violence) then A Dirty Carnival is a movie you really have to check out.
