The Monday Question: Rest!

Another weekend has passed us and a fresh new week is about to start again. Hope you all had a great weekend and enjoyed yourself. Today the weekly question is about something which probably has happened to all of us. You are really excited to see a movie, get ready to go but when you are at the cinema you suddenly notice that your body doesn’t have the same plans as you do, causing you to start missing the movie. Today’s question is:
Did you ever fall asleep in the cinema?

Luckily I only had it happen to me twice. The first time it happened was when I went to London to visit friends and after I landed and dropped off my bag, we immediately headed for the cinema and went to see Cats and Dogs. It didn’t take long (probably also because of the movie) to fall asleep.

The second time was when I went out with friends to go and see Shutter Island. We had been playing squash for about two hours and since I hadn’t played sports in a while my body was wasted. My muscles were aching and let’s say I even couldn’t walk graciously. After dinner we headed to the cinema to Scorcese’s movie, which I was looking forward to. My body though saw this as an opportunity for revenge and I just couldn’t stay awake. I still have to rewatch the movie to give it a fair chance.

Did you ever fall asleep in the cinema?

  1. Now, I admit to have done this with some of the films my kids wanted to see. For something I really wanted to see, it happened for the first time to me last year with ‘Thor’. But, I had a procedure that morning and I was still feeling the effects of the medication. Well, that’s my story, anyways ;-). Interesting and fun question. Thanks.

    • Hahaha, I can understand that. I always try to get them to movies I want to see as well, although I don’t always manage it! I hope there weren’t other side effects of the medication making the movie seem all weird? 😉

  2. It’s only happened to me twice. The first time was during Star Wars episode 1. I had seen it a few days earlier, but I feel asleep at the pod racing scene!

Then, also on a second viewing, I fell asleep during Austin Powers: Goldmember. Or maybe that was the first time. haha. Fun post Nostra.

    • Surprising that it happened during that scene as it’s one of the most action packed scenes in that movie 🙂 Do you often see movies a couple of times at the cinema Max?

      • I used to go multiple times when I was younger, but not so much anymore. I saw Fellowship of the Ring three times in the theater and was glued to the screen all three times. The last movie I saw multiple times was Avatar since many different family members wanted to see it. I guess it had that power.

  3. No. Never, I paid money to see a movie and I’m sure going to sit through it (even if it sucks). I guess if you see enough movies at the theater, it would happen but thankfully, I never did fall asleep so far.

    • For me it were situations where we already had planned to go with friends. So in those cases you can’t just go home (which I’d probably had done as I usually know when I should rest). I’m happy it didn’t happen to me more often though!

  4. No, I never fall asleep in the cinema. Probably because I am well aware of paying the tickets :)) But I have some of experiences of wanting to see a movie so much but my body wanted to rest. The current experience maybe when I watched Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows, it might’ve because the story was too complicated so my mind ended up going other places.

    • Hahaha, yeah the price of tickets is enough reason to stay awake 😉

When your mind wanders off because you are tired can make for very frustrating movie watching!

  5. It used to happen to me fairly frequently. I definitely dozed off during the terrible Stallone flick Driven, and it also happened during Fellowship of the Ring. Nowadays, I don’t have much trouble staying awake in cinema. My best friend’s couch, on the other hand… I can’t ever see a film on it without nodding off.

    • Driven is the one where they race through the city right? You didn’t miss much there then. Fellowship is a long movie, so I can understand that! Hahaha, I have such a couch as well. Once you lay down to watch something you won’t make it till the end! 😉 Thanks for commenting Emil!

  6. No, I have never fallen asleep in the cinema. I have put movies on as I went to bed to watch as I fell asleep (popular favorites there include Blazing Saddles, Delicatessen and Mr. Hulot’s Holiday). I find it good to watch pleasant movies you like before you go to sleep, because then you’re more likely to dream about them!

    • That’s a very interesting way to fall asleep Tyler, maybe I should try that sometime with something like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory…but then again the Oompa Loompas might haunt my dreams.

  7. I’ve never properly fallen asleep but I’ve nodded off a couple of times. Funnily enough, I nodded off for a few seconds during Shutter Island! Like you I was suffering a little bit from over exhaustion and I figured, Shutter Island would keep me awake. Nope…

I don’t think I can allow myself to properly fall asleep. I’m far too aware of my surroundings.

      • I sort of rewatched when it came up on TV later last year. I didn’t miss much as it turned out. But those bits I did miss didn’t make me enjoy the film any more!

  8. This happens to me way too much. It’s often because I watch films back to back, and even though I get really cold in the cinema I still can’t help drifting off. When I saw Avatar I literally had to keep pinching myself to stay awake but it didn’t help too much!

It is never happened because I find a film boring, just because I get so sleepy! Very glad I’m not the only one!

    • Hahaha, I can imagine you sitting there constantly trying to keep yourself awake. No amount of 3D can help against sleep I guess. You’ve now scientifically proven that. 😉

It doesn’t matter to me either whether or not it’s a boring movie, my body shuts down. If I would add the number of times it happened at home this would have probably been a very long post.

  9. Ooh nice post Nostra.

I must admit I have been lucky that I haven’t actually fallen asleep in the cinema yet. Although I came close to doing so last week at J. Edgar screening. It was only the poor leg room that stopped me from it!!

    Nice one

  10. Twice, a long time ago. Once because the movie was not good and slow. The second time because of exhaustion. They were both in the early nineties, and the for the life of me I can not remember their names.

    Good Question.

  11. Hi, Nostra and company:

    intriguing question today!

I’ve never fallen victim to the joke about falling asleep during ‘The Guns of Navarone’ made famous on the old Dick Van Dyke Show.

I’ve been tempted to leave a film before it ends.Though my eyes have glazed over during a few of what passes for Romantic Comedies these days.

  12. Ahah, interesting question. Hmmm, I think I almost did whilst watching one of the documentaries during a film fest. I must’ve been very tired that day and it was like my 3rd film of the day, so it wasn’t because the doc was bad. But no, generally I could keep myself awake in the theater.

  13. I think it has only happened to me twice. When I went to see She’s the One years ago I was asleep within 10 minutes, and after I woke up my friends and I walked out. Recently I dosed off while watching Arthur Christmas, only because I was very tired and the theatre was very warm; it was quite an entertaining movie otherwise.

  14. As far as I can remember I have only fallen asleep during one movie. Sorry Liam Neeson, it was during UNKNOWN. It was a bad movie. Slow, dull, and boring it just couldn’t keep me awake. To clarify, I had worked a 12 hour shift, had minimal sleep the night before, so it probably had A LOT to do with it…but the movie certainly didn’t do anything to keep me engaged.

    • I quite liked Unknown myself 🙂 Wow, you really must have been excited to go and see it if you didn’t go home to rest after such a long shift.

  15. Can’t say I have ever fallen asleep at the theater. I rarely do at home either. I try to stay attentive just in case I decide to write about the movie. 🙂

  16. Yet another great question, Nostra! I’m with Castor, if I’ve paid to see it then I will stay until the end credits flash up. I haven’t fallen asleep at the cinema but I have a few times at home. I think, like you, that was just down to tiredness though 😛

    • Thanks Claire, have to keep making up original ones and thought it be an interesting thing to know 🙂

As you can see it has happened to me too often fortunately!
