The Big Hit (1998)

Review of The Big Hit

If this image above interests you than I can already tell you that you should check out The Big Hit if you have not seen it yet. It quickly summarises this over the top action movie perfectly as it both silly and entertaining. I had not seen this movie in ages and when I recently was browsing IMDB it came by in the suggestions. It was a film I had forgotten about until I saw its poster and I just had to revisit it.

Review of The Big Hit

The story is about a group of hitmen who decide to kidnap the daughter of a rich businessman, which seems a very good plan until they find out that the situation they have created is a very risky one. I don’t want to give too much away about the story as this is a fun ride you should experience without knowing too much. That way the jokes have the biggest impact.

It is clear that this movie is a product of its time, which you will notice as soon as the title comes up and you hear its soundtrack (which can sometimes take you out of the movie a bit), but if you look past that there is a lot of fun to be had watching this film. The main characters are so extreme that they could easily be taken out of some cartoon, but the complete dedication of the actors to their roles make them so enjoyable to watch. Lou Diamond Phillips really is the highlight of the movie, but Mark Wahlberg is also enjoyable as the hitman with a conscience who wants to please everyone and is afraid of conflict.

Review of The Big Hit

Some parts of the movie are almost slapstick (for example the scene in which the kidnapped girl is jumping through the house) and parts of the movie so ridiculous that you can’t help but laugh (the father of the kidnapped girl has made the most expensive movie ever made called “Taste the Golden Spray”). I can understand this movie is not widely loved, but it is one of those movies I happily revisit from time to time as it offers a nice blend of action and humour.

  1. I remember this film when it came out. It was OK. Mark Wahlberg was pretty good though I wasn’t sure at the time if there was more to him as I hoped that his performance in “Boogie Nights” wasn’t a fluke. It would finally take “I Heart Huckabee’s” to finally make me take him seriously. I like the guy. I’m glad we don’t have to remember him as Marky Mark.

  2. I saw this in cinemas on release, and thought it was awesome!! Admittedly, I haven’t seen it in the best part of a decade, but it truly is an awesome film. Can’t believe you only scored Marky Mark an 8?? Worth a solid 9 (or 10) from me!!

And that opening picture is a corker, innit?

    • Yeah Rodney, it is an awesome movie indeed. Hahaha, well I can understand people giving this higher scores. It is definitely one of those movies you will still enjoy during a revisit.
