+1 (2013)

Although there are several movies which involve time travel, it is a genre which is relatively small when compared to other genres (at least that is my feeling). It is one of my favorite types of film though, so if there is any opportunity to check one out I always do so. Plus One deals with a specific subgenre, the time loop. Timecrimes and Triangle are two examples of movies which use the concept of time repeating to great effect and they are both movies I really enjoyed. How does +1 compare?

The setting of +1 is that of the college world where the main character David (Rhys Wakefield), together with some friends, is going to a big party after having some issues with his girlfriend Jill (played by Ashley Hinshaw). When they are at the party the lights suddenly go out and a strange phenomenon starts happening. They see themselves doing exactly the same things they were doing a short while ago. Instead of trying to figure out what is happening exactly David sees this as an opportunity to win back the affection of Jill. The question is though if he can do this and when the phenomenon repeats itself more frequently if this is not going to cause bigger problems.

Although I really liked the concept and the way it has been implemented here, it seems that eventually the writers did not know how to keep it interesting. Everything seem to be slowly building up to something which is never delivered and that really is a shame. Movies like the aforementioned Timecrimes and Triangle linger in your mind after watching them, making you think about their story, trying to figure out if it all makes sense. +1 simply doesn’t deliver enough depth to do that.

  1. Hmm…like you I love a good time travel movie but great ones seem few and far between. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention despite it not hitting all the right notes. The concept does seem a bit like About Time (or at least a portion of that film) which I really enjoyed.

    • Happy I could do that…don’t go in with high expectations and you will get some enjoyment. It is different compared to About Time (which I think is better than this one), but unique in its own way.
