Site for movie lovers: Movli.com

One of the first articles I ever wrote for my blog was “Sites every movie lover should use”, which was four years ago and in that time a lot of new sites have popped up.

One of the latest is Movli.com and I have been checking it out this last week. A site dedicated to movies has to have standout features and those of Movli are unique as it combines movie recommendations, a social aspect and a vast movie database. The recommendations are front and center and getting started is quick and easy.

Signing up is quick as you can just log in with your Facebook, Twitter or Google+ account (and for those who don’t like to give too much access for posting to your timelines there are settings in Movli to change that) and you’ll be presented with a huge list of movies. Next thing to do is start clicking away, indicating if you have seen a movie and if so what kind of rating you’d give it. If you haven’t seen a movie there is a coloured bar where you indicate how much you’d like to see that movie. If you rate it completely red it will be placed on a blacklist, but anything higher will end up in your watch list and based on the color you gave it will end up high or low in the list. By making your choices the site will create what they call an “evolving genome”, which according to the site “reflects your unique taste in movies. It evolves with your movie ratings.”

The social aspect of the site allows you to follow other members of the site. What is great about this is that you can search your favourite movie, see who also gave it a perfect score and check out if they have the same taste in movies as you do. Their page will also show their movie recommendations. It is an aspect I have not looked into extensively yet, but I see it as a very interesting aspect.

One thing I which I missed, but got confirmation which will be introduced in the future is the possibility of importing your ratings from IMDB. I’ve been using IMDB for ratings since 2004 and that has resulted in almost 2000 of them. Most movie recommendations I see are movies I have seen already and clicking on all of those could take me a while. Fortunately Movli also offers very good filters, so it is easy to pick your favourite genre, the time period (for example the 80’s) and see a tailor made list for you. Doing so I did find several movies I had not seen yet. You can even filter on language, which is a great way to start discovering movies from foreign countries.

As you know I really like Korean cinema and it has made my “to watch” list a whole lot longer with a lot of movies I had not heard of before. If you only want to watch movies which have a rating of only 7 and higher you can also specify this. This will probably be the aspect of the site I will be using the most as it is quick and powerful.

I recommend checking out the site as it really shows a lot of potential.
