The Monday Question: The LAMMYs!

The Monday Question

Just like many of you, I have been a member of the Large Association of Movie Blogs (LAMB) for a couple of years now. There were periods where I was quite actively participating and times where I was wondering if I should stay a member as I didn’t feel it added much to my movie blogging experience. Of course how much you get out of it depends on how much energy you are willing to invest, but there was something I was looking forward to each year and those were the LAMMYs. The awards which would be voted upon by your fellow movie bloggers. I’ve participated in these each year and even managed to get nominated. They were usually held somewhere in the first half of the year, but this year they still have not happened. I had read something about it, but had forgotten the details, so last week I asked The Lamb directly through its Twitter account when and if they would take place this year. The answer I got was: “We’re still expecting our new shepherd, and in the meantime, I have no info about this year’s LAMMYs. We’ll update it asap“. So as it seems that without a shepherd, just one person who isn’t there, something like the LAMMYs doesn’t take place, which of course is very disappointing to hear. So I want to ask you:

How do you feel about the fact that the LAMMYs have not taken place yet and might not happen this year?

  1. I asked them several months ago about The Lammys. As I recall they usually happen a month or so after the Oscars. I was told they were still coming but now it looks like there’s no chance of that. It really is a bummer because I felt The Lammys was such a great concept and it introduced me to several sites that others are reading. As with any awards thing, I didn’t always agree with the winners, but this was really more about bringing the community together and it was very successful in doing so. I think their explanation to you is really quite odd.

    • Yeah, I thought it was a bit strange as well and to be honest it is one of the few reasons I still am part of the LAMB. Like you say it is a great way to discover new blogs because only the best will bubble up and it is the thing which really gives that sense of community.

  2. I think it’s connected to the way things are basically up in the air with the LAMB on the whole right now. There’s still the Lambcast, but that’s about all that’s happening on the site. I’ve enjoyed the Lammy’s in the past, but I think not much will happen with them or the LAMB until the new shepherd takes over. It’s hard to say if anyone has stepped up or what’s going on with getting a new person, though.

  3. The last I heard, they were doing the Lammy’s in Autumn but now that that’s past, I doubt we’ll see them this year. Such a shame, though, as I got a real buzz from them. I managed to get a couple of Nominations last year and was hoping to get involved again but alas it looks unlikely. 🙁

  4. Hi Nostra. I actually haven’t been paying attention to LAMBS or LAMMYs. I doubt I’d get any nominations this year but that is ok, as then I can root for my fellow bloggers 😀

    • Well, that’s the thing. If there aren’t going to be any one of the cornerstones of the LAMB isn’t there any more and that’s really disappointing.

  5. I missed this when originally posted.

The LAMB, if it’s going to be around for another year, needs to have people willing to do the work to resurrect it. Without that I think the last version of the awards will be the last.

I’m not confident that such members are still around.

    • Well-said, Steve. I’m been thinking very similar thoughts about the LAMB lately. It thrived when dedicated people were running it, but it’s hard to find people that will take on that mantle. It’s too bad, but I think you’re right.
