The Monday Question: Size!

The Monday Question

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Monday question, but have had a lot of other non-blog related things to do. As a movie lover you watch a lot of movies and preferably in the cinema. If that’s not an option though and you are at home, in what way do you watch your movies? That’s the thing I want to know this week.

I myself have been using my 42 inch Panasonic plasma TV (together with a surround set) for some years now and have been dreaming about creating a separate cinema for years now. As that currently doesn’t seem to be possible I’ve decided to do the next best thing: Add components to the living room in order to make it more cinema like. So I headed over to the Wirecutter (great site to see what the best product is in a specific category) and decided I will add a beamer to my setup. After finding the European equivalent of their recommendation I went ahead and ordered it and it should be arriving today. I have not bought a proper screen yet as I first want to find out which size is perfect for my room and using the beamer I can get a feel as to which size I find most comfortable.

Have you ever considered buying a beamer to enjoy your movies even more?

  1. I don’t exactly know what a beamer is so I can’t say I’ve used it or not. But I do have a little home theater room at my house, I use front projector and projected on a 100inch screen. I prefer a bigger screen but that’s the biggest screen I can fit into the room. When I buy a new house, I’m going to look for a bigger space so I can fit at least 150inch screen. Like you I used to own a 42 inch LCD TV but then I upgraded to front projector about ten years ago and never look back. I refuse to watch movies at home on regular TV, only on my projector.

  2. Yeah, over here we call it a beamer, which is the same as a projector. For it delivered today and now have to wait for it to get dark to really see what it can do. Ordered a screen which is two metres wow and 1,13 metre high, which I’ll probably get tomorrow. Don’t know how many inches that is, but testing it on a white wall it looked nice and big.

    • Okay gotcha. Congrats on upgrading to a beamer/projector, you’ll love it! Which projector did you get? I have the Panasonic PTAE8000U, which to me it’s the best one to get under $5000. I was hesitant about 3D but now I love watching 3D movies at home because this projector is great with 3D pictures. I know it’s convenient and cheap to use your wall to display the picture but I highly recommend you look for a nice projector screen if you have some extra cash; it will make quite a difference. I did some searching and found an awesome 2.35:1 100 inch screen for cheap. Amazon is a good place to search, they have descent prices for projector screens.

      • I do love it and already watched a couple of movies on it….it added so much. I bought a Benq W1070+, which The Wirecutter chose for the best sub $1000 projector….the European version was around 800 euro and it is very good. It does support 3D, but didn’t come with glasses, so don’t know if I’ll be using that since I don’t have a Blu Ray player.

I bought the projector screen two days ago and it came yesterday, it really adds a lot to the experience. It is 16:9 format, which I good for most movies I’m watching.

  3. I’ve never been totally convinced about projectors. Well, unless you really fork out and you have a HUGE wall/screen to watch it on. I get more immersed in films by the sounds. That’s why right now I really, REALLY miss my 5.1 surround sound which I had to leave behind in England when I moved.

    • I must say that with the model I bought I’m really happy. Screen will probably be around 90 inches and the projector itself wasn’t very expensive, around 800 euros.

I can imagine that you miss 5.1, that does add something to the experience.
