The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017) – Review

Review The Hitman's Bodyguard

Although Ryan Reynolds was never an actor to me who stood out or whose movies I watched much, he managed to become very relavant thanks to his appearance in Deadpool. The film, which he helped to realize, was an unexpectedly successful. One of the first posters for this film, which parodied the poster of The Bodyguard, made this also seem like a film that was worth watching. Especially when you consider that Reynolds would share the screen together with Samuel L. Jackson. Does that make for a fun movie?

Review The Hitman's Bodyguard

Michael Bryce (Reynolds) is the best bodyguard in the world until one of his assignments does not go as planned. He still has work, but no longer of the level he was used to. Meanwhile, contract killer Darius Kincaid (Jackson) has been arrested. He has information about a war criminal (played by Gary Oldman), who is doing everything he can to take him out. Due to circumstances Michael and Darius end up together and it is up to Michael to ensure that Darius gets to The Hague safely to testify at the International Court of Justice. However, the two can’t really get along with each other.

“Not a great movie…”

You would expect it to be a joy to see Reynolds and Jackson arguing, but unfortunately that is not the case. The jokes mostly don’t hit their targets and there are moments that are really annoying (Samuel L. Jackson who starts singing at a certain moment, Selma Hayek who is awful to watch). With a running time of almost two hours, the film is also too long. Are there reasons to watch this movie? In my opinion, too few. The only thing which was kind of fun to see was a chase in the center of Amsterdam and a number of other action moments. But it never seems to end. Not a great movie, which I really had trouble finishing.

  1. I liked it a bit better than you. It wasn’t great, but the combination of Reynolds and Jackson at least made it watchable for me. And I’ll disagree on Hayek. She was over the top, but she’s Salma Hayek so she gets a pass from me, lol.
