The Breaker Upperers (2018) – Review

Recensie The Breaker Upperers
It’s sometimes difficult to keep track of what new content has appeared on Netflix. The streaming service itself does not have a clear overview in its interface and it is a pity that the suggestions are based more on popularity and your own taste instead of a simple list of new titles from which you make your own choice. Fortunately, I keep track of what comes out by reading other film blogs and listening to podcasts, so that way I’ll hear about titles which are worth watching. One of them is The Breaker Upperers, a comedy made in New Zealand.

Review The Breaker Upperers

Mel (Madeleine Sami) and Jen (Jackie van Beek) run a “break up” service together. When someone wants out of a relationship, they facilitate this. For example by playing a secret lover or telling a dramatic story. The two have been friends for years and things are going well. Yet their work slowly begins to gnaw at Mel, because she realizes it is actually her job to make people unhappy. This results in tensions between the two and the question is how to deal with that.

“high joke density…”

Have you been able to enjoy the humor in for example Boy, Hunt for the Wilderpeople or the last Thor? Then The Breaker Upperers is a title that you should definitely give a chance. Sami and van Beek, who also wrote the script and directed the film, have created a very humorous film with a high joke density and great chemistry between them. With a fun supporting cast and awkward situations, this is a movie that Netflix should have promoted more.
