Who Is Arthur Chu? (2017) – Review

Recensie Who is Arthur Chu

Who Is Arthur Chu? That was the question I asked myself when I saw this title. Since Jeopardy! isn’t a show that’s available here I didn’t know anything about him. In this game show the answers are shown and the participants have to guess the question. Arthur Chu also participated and managed to win a lot of money. However, the way he played earned him a lot of criticism from the show’s fans, who felt that he was playing in an unfair way by not playing in a fixed order. Some people called him a “Jeaopardy! Villain”. This documentary spends little time on his participation, but focuses more on his life afterwards.

Because of the attention he received for his participation, he slowly but surely sees his number of followers on social media grow. The number of Twitter followers is regularly mapped and he tries to turn that growth in popularity into something that he can make his profession so that he can leave his work in insurance behind him. He spends an enormous amount of time on Twitter and writing articles for, for example, The Daily Beast and still seems to be searching a lot for himself. That seems to be at the expense of his marriage. His wife suffers from an illness that forces her home a lot and Chu pays less and less attention to her while he also struggles with the bond with his father. Yet Chu knows very well how to express what is going on in “nerd culture” and is therefore invited, for example, to speak at conferences. However, he continues to struggle with his identity and what others think of him and that ultimately results in a fascinating documentary that gives good insight into who Chu is.
