Between Two Ferns: The Movie (2019) – Review

Between Two Ferns the movie recensie

The web series Between Two Ferns, in which Zach Galifianakis interviews famous people in a very special way, has always been entertaining to watch. By means of his questions he actually criticizes the other and makes them more or less embarrassed, but his guests like to play along. The short format resulted in a lot of funny moments and it now has made the transition to a full movie on Netflix. But does such a concept work if you have to fill 82 minutes?

Between two ferns the movie review
The answer is mixed, because you can’t actually call this a movie. The plot is so thin that it is almost invisible: Zach has to do 10 interviews in a very short time to get a late night talk show. What follows are a number of sketches interspersed with interviews with a large number of celebrities. It is those pieces that are the funniest, but are actually a lot shorter in shape than the original show. As a result, the whole feels like a joke that has been stretched too thing. Between Two Ferns: The Movie will probably not attract new fans for the series and if you have seen previous episodes, it offers just too little. Galifianakis plays his role as a socially awkward character perfectly and the cameos are fun, but as a whole it disappoints a bit.
