Death to 2020 (2020) – Review

Death to 2020 review

A lot has been written about 2020. It is obvious it will go into the history books as a year that has been memorable (in a negative way). Writer Charlie Brooker, who many will know as the creative mind behind Black Mirror, decided to make a Netflix movie. The end result? A satirical look back at the past surreal 12 months, mixing real imagery with interviews with “experts”. These are played by Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Lisa Kudrow and Kumail Nanjiani among others.

You might wonder if you really would like to look back at the past year, but Death to 2020 makes this an enjoyable experience. Hugh Grant disappears in his role as a historian who regularly argues with the person asking the questions and loves to remember TV shows as they were real history. Lisa Kudrow is the spokeswoman for the White House and basically denies everything. Tracey Ullman is also amazing as the Queen. With its relative short running time of only 70 minuten it might not be the most memorable movie, but it offers enough entertainment to burn through some time. It doesn’t only focus on the pandemic, but also takes a look at the American elections, the Black Lives Matter movement and various other subjects.

  1. Hi Nostra, happy new year and I hope all is well with you and yours.

I saw this had popped up on Netflix but I haven’t watched it yet. Black Mirror is usually very, very clever so I’ll probably watch it soon.

  2. It was amazing, when watching this, realising that the craziness of 2020 started so much earlier than March!
I enjoyed this though, some jokes worked better than others but I’m glad I watched it.

  3. Hello Nostra, happy new year! Hope you have been well, my friend. Long time no ‘chat’ btw, but I’m glad you are still blogging.

I saw this one as the last film of 2020. Despite the stellar cast, I wish this were a better mockumentary. I enjoyed it in parts but overall it’s not all that great and not all that funny. I think the real 2020 is crazier than what’s depicted, ahah.
