Pixels (2015) – Review

Recensie Pixels

I had promised myself to skip this latest Adam Sandler film. I had a good reasons to do so: If you look at the last ten films he made there isn’t one of them that’s worth watching. In his younger years, I could still enjoy his movies, but I have developed an aversion towards Sandler because he keeps making disappointing movies.

But why did I end up still watching Pixels? Curiosity probably is the most important reason. And I wasn’t curious if he had made a good movie this time, but I wanted to know how the game element is incorporated into the film. As someone who grew up gaming that element excited me so I decided, against my better judgment, to give Pixels a chance Continue reading

Tracers (2015)

Review Tracers

Taylor Lautner has become famous for his role in the various Twilight Saga films, in which he played the role of Jacob Black. Although he played in Abduction after the Twilight movies he hasn’t succeeded yet to become an actor who gets viewers to the cinema. It seems that with Tracers he still hasn’t manage to change that status. Continue reading

Dracula Untold (2014)

Review Dracula Untold

Both the world of books as the world of movies are filled with characters which are widely loved. There is something about these characters that people feel a connection with, making them care for them and their adventures. As one of these characters starts appearing in more books/movies you come into them with specific expectations of what that character would do. You wouldn’t expect Rambo to suddenly start giving ballet classes. Bram Stoker wrote the story of Dracula in 1897 and the character became popular, a vampire looking for blood in order to spread his curse. It resulted in many plays and movies, which made him a legend. According to Dracula Untold a part of his life was never shown. Maybe there was a reason for that? Continue reading

Jungle Shuffle (2014)

review Jungle shuffle

It is lonely at the top and that’s also the case when it comes to computer animation. The top movies are made with budgets that run into the tens of millions and many more are spent on promoting them. This makes it hard for smaller studios to compete and results in smaller animation movies not getting attention. Jungle Shuffle is one of them. Does this one manage to separate itself enough from the rest to get attention? Continue reading

Aanmodderfakker (2014)

Review Aanmodderfakker

You might think that as a movie lover I am always looking forward to the various award shows (Oscars, BAFTA’s, Palme D’Ors and in the Netherlands the Golden Calves), but this isn’t the case at all. I never watch them when they are broadcast and except for maybe having a quick peek at the winners those type of events don’t do anything for me. Of course those awards do mean some extra attention for a movie/director or actor, but in the end it all comes down to politics in choosing the winners. It has often happened that some movies got a ton of awards, but which I didnt enjoy at all. This was also the case with this movie which won prizes for best movie, script and actor. Continue reading

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)

Review Sin City a Dame to Kill For

Should you make a sequel after the original came out 10 years earlier? When the original movie got rave reviews and it has characters which are widely loved it seems like a nobrainer. The result doesn’t always work though. The original Star Wars trilogy was adored, but the three new films disappointed many. A Dame to Kill For is the sequel to the Sin City movie from 2005. Should this movie have been made? Continue reading

Mommy (2014)

Review Mommy

During all the years I’ve been going to the cinema it has only happened once that I exited the theatre before the end of the movie. I can’t remember the title of the movie I did that, but it was an Eastern European movie about gypsies. In general I always tend to finish what I start, but that can be difficult sometimes. It was certainly the case for this movie, Mommy. Continue reading

Zero Theorem (2013)

Review The Zero Theorem

Through the years director Terry Gilliam has managed to make a number of widely loved movies. Films like Brazil, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Twelve Monkeys and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas are just a few examples. He has always been good in creating strange, but at the same time very believable, worlds in which you could lose yourself. With Zero Theorem he tries to do this again, but this time I felt he failed. After watching it I had the feeling I wasn’t watching a recent movie, but something made in the nineties with disappointing CGI and a world which doesn’t feel like it came into becoming a reality in an organic way. The story itself also did not manage to make my heart beat any faster. Continue reading

Prince Avalanche (2013)

Review Prince Avalanche

Each movie has an audience. No matter how bad/weird/abstract a movie is there will be people who will love it and who will watch it endlessly. Earlier this year I reviewed Robert Redford’s All Is Lost, a movie which I really could not appreciate, but I know it will receive a lot of praise as well. I feel Prince Avalanche is also one of those movies. It is not something I was able to enjoy, but there is definitely an audience for it. Continue reading
