Films about film

As you’ll probably know by now I’m a huge fan of documentaries. It’s a genre I think doesn’t get enough attention when you compare it to movies with famous stars in them and that’s a shame. The great thing about documentaries is that it’s possible to find one about any subject. Which is also the case when it comes to film itself. The last couple of years I’ve seen a lot of them, dealing with various aspects of making movies and the movie industry itself. If you want to know more about what goes on behind the scenes, then this long list might be a nice start in discovering a lot. Continue reading

Catch .44 (2011)

review Catch .44

I have a question for you (and it’s not even Monday). Do you ever have the feeling when you are watching a movie that it strongly reminds you of some other movie or that the style is very similar to a movie done by a specific director? I think it happens to all of us and as the number of movies you watch increases it’s a feeling that will happen more often as well. I had it very strongly with this movie. It seems that writer and director Aaron Harvey has been watching a lot of Quentin Tarantino movies. With a lot of focus on dialogue, a non linear storyline, similar music choices, grindhouse style cuts and some very violent scenes Catch .44 offers a lot of the same. Does it manage to reach the same level as Tarantino’s movies? Continue reading

Superbad (2007)

In the last couple of years Judd Apaptow managed to change the face of the comedy genre.
With the humor in movies like 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall he has shown that that kind of humor, which is more oriented to older watcher is a very succesful formula. There have been a lot of movies that tried to copy it, but not all have managed to follow the success. Apatow was also involved with Superbad and you can clearly see. The movie shows a couple of teenagers who promise their fellow students they will buy booze for a party. It’s a big chance for them to be very popular at school. There is only one slight problem and it’s that they don’t have the legal age to buy alcohol yet. Continue reading

Tales from the script (2009)

When you look at the pictures below, you probably won’t go “Ooh, that’s him and that’s that guy!”. When i write their names, Frank Darabont and Paul Schrader, you still probably won’t know who they are. Even when i name the following movie titles: The Green Mile, The Mist, Shawshank Redemption and Raging Bull, Taxi Driver it still will be hard to think of a way to connect those movies with the pictures below.

The Cove (2009)

The cove is a documentary about the dolphin fishing and trade in Japan, a controversial subject. The movie has been very well made and feels like a spy movie. The moviemakers are being followed and can’t count on any help of the local fishermen. They needed to make this movie with an almost military way of handling the filming (using secret cameras that need to be placed during a mission in the night) when the dolphins are caught. Because of this it has become an exciting documentary to watch. Continue reading
