Celeste & Jesse Forever (2012)

Review of the movie Celeste and Jesse Forever (2012)

Breaking up is one of the hardest decisions to make and after having been married for a while Celeste (Rashida Jones) and Jesse (Andy Samberg) decide to separate. The only thing though is that you wouldn’t be able to tell. They still spend all their time together, doing fun things and joking together. Their friends even freak out about it, how can you decide to separate, but remain so close? Even as you are watching it you see their chemistry. Is it possible to be and stay friends?

Which such a subject you might expect this to be a dramatic movie, but this is not the case. It is not your typical romcom fare either. It just has the right mix of comedy and drama. The comedy is in the various situations the characters end up. Celeste works at a PR firm (predicting what trends will be) and works with Scott (Elijah Wood, who’s very funny). She gets an assignment to work on the PR for a very popular young musician, who she really doesn’t like. When Jesse has some news she might not like things get difficult for her as she has to deal with the feelings she still has for him.

This is a movie that hasn’t had too much attention, but is worth watching as the relationship between Jones and Samberg feels real as does the world the movie is set in. Although the movie doesn’t reach the level set by a movie like (500) Days of Summer, I do think it can be compared to it. With a lot of funny situations and an unconventional story it is a movie which managed to surprise me and I hope it will do the same for you.

I remember hearing about this ages ago and had completely forgotten about it but it was one I very much wanted to see. I had some friends who had a similar type break up (where they were really close still) so it’ll be interesting to see how it relates to what happens here.

It is well worth checking out and hope you’ll get a chance to see it soon. Like I mention, it hasn’t received much attention, but I think it should.

Jones is a lovable personality to have at the center of your rom-com and I hope this really gets her more roles in the future. Not that she wasn’t already gaining them already, but you know what I mean. Good review Nostra.

I haven’t seen her in a lot of movies, but those I have seen I really liked. Have to check out more of her work.

For some reason this film keeps slipping off my radar. I read good things about it, plan to see it, and then other stuff gets in the way and I forget. I’d like to see Samberg handling dramatic moments and I figure this is one of my best shots. Thanks for reminding me about this one!

Try to keep it on it as it is worth your time. I think Samberg did a great job as I only know him from The Lonely Island and another movie he did, he showed a different side here.
