Juno (2007)

After watching both Thank you for smoking and Up in the Air i also had to see another Jason Reitman movie, Juno (after suggestions from other). Ellen Page is Juno, a 16 year old girl that finds out she is pregnant. Is Juno just as good as the other two movies or is it as painful as giving birth?

First the answer to my question: Yes, this movie is as good as the other movies. Juno is a spontaneous, quick talking teenager that will let you know what she thinks about something. She’s not afraid to open her mouth. Ellen Page is very good in this and she manages to make it her movie.

The movie is funny as well, despite the serious subject. During the whole movie you are not told “You should not get pregnant, it’s bad”. It simply show who Juno handles her pregnancy. It’s a fresh view on the subject. At one point in the movie Juno says that all kids are looking at her stomach and not at her. As you watch the movie, it’s the other way around. You want to know about her, you want to know what she is thinking, that she’s pregnant is not the main thing. It’s about all the issues surrounding it.

Lately i’ve seen a lot of movies in which J.K.Simmons also stars (like Extract, Up in the Air en the Vicious Kind) and i’m slowly becoming a big fan of his acting. Everytime i see him i’m impressed by him.
Olivia Thirlby, who is Juno’s friend in the movie, reminded me of a younger Scarlett Johansson, she really has similairities with her. In the movie New York, I Love you she also starred in one of the stories and i noticed her there as well (playing a girl in a wheelchari might also have helped with it).

To summarise, Juno is a great comedy mixed with some drama that i definately want to recommend.

Score: 8
