King Kong (1933)

King Kong is one of the most famous monsters the film industry has produced. This original 1933 version has resulted in many remakes, the latest being a faithful recreation in 2005 by Peter Jackson (which also follows the same story as the original including a spider scene which was cut from the original) By now everyone knows the story about a movie producer who wants to shoot his next movie on a far away island, which turns out to be inhabited by dinosaurs and a big gorilla. The star of the movie, Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) is captured by the gorilla and the rest of the crew decide to fight the monster to get her back.

Although the movie is over 70 years old, it is still a movie that’s interesting to watch. The special effects must have been amazing for the time and it is still impress what has been done with the stop motion animation of the monsters. It might look dated now, but it doesn’t distract from the story.
The combination of stop motion and live action has been implemented extremely well, although it is noticeable. These are things I really didn’t mind and made me enjoy the movie even more. Movie is make-believe anyway, so it’s kind of fun to see how it’s done. It’s a joy to watch King Kong fight the various other monsters on the island.

The movie still holds a spot in the IMDB top 250, which does mean it is a movie that’s still enjoyed and appreciated by thousands of people. For me it’s also another step in reaching my goal to have watched 175 movies out of the 250 before the end of the year. As the list changes a lot I think 175 is a nice number to try to reach.
I’ve added a counter on the right of the site where you will be able to see my progress and of course I will review the other movies I see.

Despite its age King Kong is still an entertaining movie and definitely recommended.

Score: 8

    • It definitely is, although it’s hard to decide if I’d rather see this one or the new Peter Jackson version. Although the stories are the same they are different kind of movies.
